My Career & Convictions:
I’m a New York Times, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, and #1 Amazon best-selling author. I’m also an international bestseller and award winner. I began self-publishing in 2011, and later, with success, I signed several titles with traditional publishers. My works have been translated into more than twenty languages and have been optioned for film and television.
However, after more than three decades of using my gift for the wrong things, I have given all of that up to praise and honor God instead.
I removed sixteen secular books from sale, including my popular crime & suspense series—one of my only means of income. Four secular books remain, as I no longer own the rights and cannot remove them. I’m in the process of reintroducing a few titles after I’ve edited them to be more aligned with my Christian faith.
I write historical, post-apocalyptic/dystopian, Young Adult fantasy, and contemporary fantasy. Although I am a devoted Christian, many of my books are not sanitized because I choose to show human life through a lens of truth, which means writing about difficult topics that are not sugar-coated. But I also write Christian Middle Grade and Teen fiction—that is very much sanitized—under the name “Jessica Bradford”.
My Personality & Realizations:
I’ve tried to be the quiet, inoffensive version of a Christian that some churches often hold up as the standard. I’ve tried to hide my sarcasm, soften my voice, and round off the rougher edges of my personality to fit into the mold. But every time I tried, it felt fake. And I don’t believe God is glorified through performance.
The truth is, I have a dark sense of humor. I’m blunt. I’m intense. I write stories that press into the shadows of human nature, not away from them. I ask hard questions and sit with uncomfortable truths. That’s who I am, and I’ve come to believe—after years of struggling—that God never asked me to be anyone else.
