The Healing He Provides

The Grateful Journal Series

Getting sick or injured is an inevitable part of life. While some of us have managed to get through most of our lives with nothing more than a stomachache or a bruise, I’m sure most of us have suffered much worse. Then, a smaller fraction of us have gone through a little more than the average person. And then, in category four are the few who have suffered the worst of the worst or who might still be going through a life-altering injury or diagnosis right now.

I fall in the third category. I’ve never broken a bone, but I’ve had a cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal), a hysterectomy, spontaneous pneumothorax (partial lung collapse), appendectomy, three full-term pregnancies, one miscarriage, and two concussions. I’ve been through every kind of minor sickness imaginable, from the flu to alcohol poisoning, food poisoning, and pancreatitis. Currently, I’m dealing with fibrocystic breast disease and Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, and I have nodules on my thyroid monitored yearly. And…I’m anticipating menopause.

While our physical bodies are susceptible to an endless list of sicknesses, diseases, and injuries, they are, by design, resilient. God made us complex but not untouchable. We are only human, after all. Sinful humans who forfeited immunity to sickness, disease, and injury a long time ago in the Garden of Eden.
