God provides us with many luxuries, things we don’t necessarily need but are blessed with. Why does God give us things we don’t need? For some of us, God wants us to live abundantly—He is the source of all blessing and prosperity—because with wealth, we can further the physical expansion of His kingdom.
The blessing of the Lord makes rich,
and he adds no sorrow with it.
Proverbs 10:22
It is OK to own things and have wealth, but it’s not OK that things and wealth own us. Wealth and material possessions have a way of becoming the focus of our lives, which, in turn, become idols. Idolatry can be one of the sneakiest sins because we often do it without realizing it. We put our material possessions and money on a higher pedestal than God by thinking about them more, tending to them more, obsessing over them, and our unwillingness to give them up.
For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.
1 Timothy 6:10
He who loves money will not be satisfied with money, nor he who loves wealth with his income; this also is vanity.
Ecclesiastes 5:10
God wants us to live abundant lives, but He always wants to be honored and elevated higher than the things we own. And many of us don’t do that. God also wants us to use our wealth and status to help others and to praise Him. It’s not a sin to have wealth and material possessions, but it is a sin to ignore the call to help others by sharing what we have been blessed with.
